Clematis 'apiifolia' is a wild species native to China, Korea and Japan that reached Europe towards the end of the 19th century. Its species name refers to its parsley-like, pinnate leaves (from the Latin apium, for celery/parsley). From September to October it opens numerous small, white, fragrant flowers 1-1.5 cm across with striking creamy-white stamens – star-shaped and formed from four, occasionally five, narrow sepals.
Growing to around 400 cm, 'apiifolia' is one of the more vigorous clematis and suits trellises, pergolas, fences and larger supports well, spreading quickly along them. Since it flowers late in the year, it benefits from a sunny, warm spot – ideally a sheltered position with well-drained, moisture-retentive soil.
'apiifolia' is very winter-hardy (zone 4, down to about -34 to -29 °C) and reliably copes with harsh winters too. As it flowers on the current season's growth, it belongs to pruning group 3: cut the plant back hard to about 25 cm in March so it sprouts vigorously and flowers abundantly.
