Clematis 'Ascotiensis' is an old large-flowered cultivar: the British breeder John Standish raised it in 1871, and it was introduced in 1874. Its 10–12 cm flowers come in shades of blue with a darker midstripe on the pointed sepals; they open deep blue and lighten a little with age. Pale stamens set off the centre discreetly.
'Ascotiensis' flowers from July to September and reaches about 200 cm in height. It suits trellises, obelisks and other supports and can also be trained through trees. It grows in sun as well as partial shade and thrives in any aspect; the soil should be moist and well drained.
'Ascotiensis' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, -23.3 to -17.8 °C). Since it flowers on new growth, cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March. Plant it so that the crown sits 5–8 cm below the soil surface, and keep the root zone cool and shaded.
