Clematis 'Allanah' arose around 1968 as a chance seedling in Christchurch, New Zealand, where Mrs A Edwards discovered and named it. It reached Britain in 1984 via Jim Fisk and Alister Keay. Its 8–12 cm single flowers glow in a rich red that shifts towards ruby in different light, with a deeper midstripe on each sepal and dark, red-brown stamens as a strong contrast.
'Allanah' flowers from June to August and grows to around 250 cm. This makes it well suited to trellises, obelisks, fences and other supports, in the garden and in containers. It thrives in sun as well as semi-shade; it grows on any aspect, provided the soil is moist but well drained.
'Allanah' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). After the first flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; in early spring it is enough to remove dead and weak shoots. Give it a few years to establish after planting, then it shows its full splendour.
