The Clematis 'Belle of Woking' was raised by the English nursery George Jackman & Son and has been in cultivation since 1881, making it one of the oldest clematis varieties still available today. It resulted from a cross between 'Candida' and 'Fortunei'. Its 10-12 cm flowers open fully double and rosette-shaped in pale violet, with eight narrow, long-pointed petals and cream to yellow stamens; as the flowers age, the colour fades to a silvery tone.
The main flush appears from May to June on last year's wood. Reaching around 300 cm in height, 'Belle of Woking' is excellent for trellises, obelisks and pergolas, as well as for container growing on balconies and patios. A bright position in sun to semi-shade suits it best – in very hot, full-sun spots the delicate flower colour fades more quickly.
'Belle of Woking' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C) and copes well with harsh winters outdoors. As a Group 2 variety, it is cut back to 100 cm in June after the first flush; dead shoots can also be removed at any time. Allow the plant one to two years to establish before it reaches its full flowering potential.
