Clematis 'Jorma' was bred in 1982 by Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik as a seedling of 'Ernest Markham'. Its large, star-shaped flowers reach a diameter of 10 to 12 cm and appear in a rich deep violet-blue with four to five broad petals and striking pale stamens.
From July to September, 'Jorma' produces its flowers in dense succession throughout the season. Growing to around 300 cm, it is ideally suited to trellises, lattice fences and obelisks on walls or fences, where it climbs vigorously. As a late large-flowered variety, it tolerates almost any aspect, from sunny to partly shaded.
'Jorma' is very hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and reliably withstands harsh winters outdoors. It belongs to pruning group 3 and is cut back hard to about 25 cm in March – so it sends up fresh new growth each spring and flowers reliably on the current season's wood.
