Clematis 'Kiev' arose as an unnamed seedling in the Botanical Garden of Kyiv: Estonian plant enthusiast Erich Pranno took a cutting home and gave the cultivar the name of the Ukrainian capital – a naming later confirmed by breeder M. I. Orlov. Its 12 to 14 cm flowers glow in deep purple and are held on strikingly long stalks, set off by bright yellow filaments and purple anthers.
From June to August, 'Kiev' produces abundant new flowers while growing vigorously to around 300 cm. This vigour makes it a well-suited climber for trellises, trelliswork and obelisks on walls, fences or pergolas.
'Kiev' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to pruning group 3: cut the stems back hard to about 25 cm in March so the plant stays bushy and flowers abundantly in summer.
