The clematis 'Ayako' resulted from a collaboration between breeders Mogens Nyegaard Olesen of Denmark and Raymond J. Evison of the United Kingdom, and was introduced in Denmark by Poulsen Roser A/S in 2018. It belongs to the Viticella group, the Italian clematis. Its flowers are violet with cream anthers and measure 5 to 7 cm.
From June to September 'Ayako' keeps opening new flowers. At 150 to 180 cm tall and only about 60 to 80 cm wide, it stays slender and suits an obelisk, trellis or fence just as well as a large container on a balcony or terrace.
'Ayako' is hardy (zone 5, down to around -28 °C). Like all Viticella cultivars it flowers on new wood: cut the plant back to about 10 cm in March and it will shoot vigorously in spring.
