Clematis 'Delightful Scent' descends from a seedling of the species Clematis cadmia, selected and named around 2011 by Dutch breeder Ton Hannink. The name reflects a surprising discovery: the flowers give off a honey-like scent. In growth habit the variety resembles the Italian clematis (Clematis viticella), which is why it is often placed in that group. The violet-blue flowers are on the small side at 5-7 cm, but plentiful, with white filaments and a fine reddish-purple accent. The International Clematis Society named 'Delightful Scent' its 'Clematis of the Month' in April 2017.
'Delightful Scent' flowers very early in the year, from April to May, reaching a height of 200 to 300 cm. This makes it well suited to trellises, climbing frames and larger obelisks, as well as container growing on a patio, where its scent can be enjoyed at close range. A warm, sheltered spot facing south is recommended: warmth intensifies the fragrance, and the early buds are sensitive to late frosts.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut back to about 25 cm in March. The decorative seed heads remain on the plant for a long time after flowering.
