Clematis 'Elf' was selected by British breeder Barry Fretwell and belongs to the Clematis viorna relatives, the so-called leather flower clematis known for their striking bell-shaped blooms. From June to September, numerous small, thick-textured flowers 3 to 4 cm across open in violet tones; the tips of the four sepals curl gracefully outward, giving the flower its characteristic bell shape.
Reaching a height of 150 to 200 cm, 'Elf' stays pleasantly compact, making it perfect for trellises, obelisks or container growing on balconies and terraces. The delicate flowers appear in great numbers throughout the season, making this variety a rewarding continuous bloomer for gardens large and small; it suits locations in almost any orientation.
'Elf' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23.3 °C) and rewards a hard prune: cut the shoots back to around 25 cm in March so the plant re-sprouts densely and floriferously in early summer.
