The clematis 'The First Lady' was bred by American breeder Arthur H. Steffen Jr. in the USA (raised 1978, introduced 1989). Its flowers open in a delicate, pale violet and reach around 15 cm across; they show 6 to 8 oblong-elliptic, slightly wavy sepals and a striking crown of reddish-purple stamens.
Growing about 200 cm tall, 'The First Lady' suits trellises, obelisks or a large container. The first flush appears in June, followed by a second flowering from July to August on new growth. A sunny to semi-shaded spot, ideally facing south or west, with moist but well-drained soil suits it best.
'The First Lady' is hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; this corresponds to the light pruning of pruning group 2. It takes two to five years to reach its ultimate height - a little patience while it establishes pays off.
