Clematis 'Sylvia Denny' was raised by the British breeder Stephen Denny from a cross between 'Duchess of Edinburgh' and 'Marie Boisselot'. Its 8–12 cm flowers are white and scented; the early flowers are semi-double, the later ones single and somewhat smaller. Pale stamens add a delicate accent at the centre of each bloom.
The first flush in June is followed by a second flush from July to August. At around 250 cm, 'Sylvia Denny' suits trellises, climbing frames and pergolas. It thrives in full sun as well as partial shade, best in a sheltered spot; keep the root zone cool and shaded.
'Sylvia Denny' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and generous flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Plant it so that the crown sits 5–8 cm below the soil surface – this encourages shoots from the base.
