Clematis 'Luther Burbank' was raised around 1960 by the breeder A. N. Volosenko-Valenis in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, from a cross of 'Jackmanii' and 'Candida'. It is named after the American plant breeder Luther Burbank, who was also enthusiastic about clematis. Its single flowers, 10–15 cm across, are violet with a paler central bar; the overlapping tepals have wavy margins, and the prominent stamens carry yellow anthers.
The flowers open from July to September and bring colour to the garden in late summer. At around 300 cm, 'Luther Burbank' climbs trellises and obelisks and also thrives in containers. It grows in sun to partial shade, and the aspect matters less.
'Luther Burbank' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March – as a late-flowering variety of pruning group 3, it then shoots vigorously again.
