Clematis 'Morning Yellow' was bred in 1998 by Robin Mitchell, likely from a cross with 'Sunrise', and introduced under this name in 1999. Its small, 3-4 cm flowers open single to loosely double in pale primrose-yellow and fade to white as they age, with bright yellow stamens.
From May to June, 'Morning Yellow' flowers abundantly while growing vigorously to about 8 m – typical of the Montana group. This vigour makes it ideal for large trellises, pergolas, fences, or for climbing into larger trees and covering walls; it tolerates both sunny and semi-shaded positions.
'Morning Yellow' is hardy to zone 7 (about -17.7 to -12.3 °C). As it belongs to pruning group 1, cutting back is not essential; if you want to keep growth more compact, prune the plant to about 200 cm right after flowering in June. It can take a few years to reach its full height – give it time to establish.
