Clematis 'Mikelite' comes from Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik, who raised it in 1987 from 'Madame Julia Correvon' and 'Valge Daam'; it is named after a Lithuanian girl's name. Its 5–9 cm flowers appear in deep, dark purple with a paler central bar on the pointed sepals, set off by yellow anthers on white filaments.
From June to August 'Mikelite' brightens the garden. At around 200 cm it suits trellises, obelisks and fences and combines well with pale climbing roses. It prefers semi-shade; keep the root zone shaded and the soil moist but well-drained.
'Mikelite' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -29 °C). In March, cut the plant back to about 25 cm – it then shoots vigorously and flowers richly. Plant it slightly deeper (crown 5–8 cm below the surface) so that it forms extra shoots from below ground.
