Clematis montana 'Alexander' descends from a wild form collected in 1961 in northern India by Colonel R.D. Alexander, after whom it is named. From May to June, it produces abundant white flowers 6-8 cm across, with four petals, releasing a strong, sweet fragrance.
Reaching a height of around 400 cm, 'Alexander' is a vigorous climber well suited to trellises, pergolas and house walls where there is enough room for its rambling shoots. A sunny position with the root area kept shaded encourages abundant flowering and an intense scent; in the first years after planting, this variety needs a little patience before it reaches its full potential.
'Alexander' is reliably hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 to -12.3 °C) and belongs to pruning group 1, which is pruned after flowering: cut the shoots back to about 100 cm in June to encourage compact growth and abundant flowering the following year.
