Clematis 'Benedikt' arose as a sport of the cultivar 'Blue Boy' in the breeding work of Manfred Herian in Germany and was registered with the International Clematis Society in 2009. Its small, bell-shaped, nodding flowers reach about 5 cm across and are violet, tinged slightly pink inside, with broad white to pale pink edges; the stamens and anthers are yellow.
At 150 to 200 cm, 'Benedikt' stays pleasantly compact and flowers from June to October. As it does not climb on its own but grows more in a scrambling habit, it is ideal for low trellises, perennial borders or as ground cover – even in smaller gardens.
'Benedikt' is reliably hardy (Zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C). It belongs to Pruning Group 3: cut the shoots back hard to 25 cm in March, which encourages vigorous new growth and abundant flowering in summer.
