Clematis 'Cloudburst' was bred by Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński and introduced in 2014. Its 10–15 cm flowers show an unusual play of colour: the violet edges of the sepals lighten towards the centre to an almost white heart, threaded with fine pink-violet veins. Dark purple-violet stamens on creamy filaments provide a striking contrast.
From June to September 'Cloudburst' flowers abundantly, reaching a height of 250 to 300 cm. This vigorous grower suits trellises, arches and pergolas well, and also happily climbs through larger shrubs; sunny to semi-shaded spots facing south, east or west suit it best.
'Cloudburst' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). As a member of the hard-pruning group 3, cut it back hard to about 50 cm in March — this encourages vigorous new growth and abundant flowering. This robust, undemanding cultivar was awarded a gold medal at FlowersExpo in Russia in 2014.
