Clematis 'Caroline' was raised around 1990 by the English breeder Barry Fretwell and named after plantswoman Lady Caroline Todhunter. Its 10–12 cm flowers appear in a soft pink to pinkish-white, deepening to a stronger pink towards the base of the tepals. The 4 to 8 slightly overlapping, pointed tepals curve gently backwards, set off by bright yellow stamens.
'Caroline' flowers from July to September on the current year's growth, filling the gap once many early-summer clematis have already finished. At around 250 cm, it is ideal for trellises, obelisks and other supports, and also thrives in a large container. It grows well in full sun or part shade – the key is keeping the roots and base of the plant cool and shaded, for example with ground cover or mulch, otherwise the flowers fade faster in hot sun.
'Caroline' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Since it flowers on new wood, cut the stems back hard to about 50 cm in March – this encourages dense, bushy growth and a rich summer display. Like many clematis hybrids, it can be prone to clematis wilt and aphids; sturdy companion planting at the base helps guard against both.
