Clematis 'Duchess of Waverly' is an American hybrid from the 1960s, associated with a nursery in the Waverly neighbourhood of Portland, Oregon. Its 17 cm violet flowers put on a little play of colour: over three to four weeks they lighten through violet and blue shades to soft lavender-blue, often leaving only a reddish bar on the sepals at the end. As new buds keep opening, the plant shows several colour stages at once. There are usually six overlapping sepals, with creamy yellow anthers.
At 200 to 300 cm tall, 'Duchess of Waverly' grows vigorously and spreads widely as it climbs a support. The first flush comes in May and June, with a second flowering in September.
'Duchess of Waverly' is very hardy (zone 4, down to about -34 °C). It belongs to pruning group 2 and needs only light pruning. Cut it back to about 100 cm in June, after the first flowering – the September flowers then form on the new growth.
