Clematis 'Rasputin' was raised by the breeder Willem Straver in Emmerich, Germany; it was bred in 2001, first flowered in 2002 and was named in 2003. Its 8–10 cm flowers are dark violet-purple with a reddish-purple central bar. Four to six broad, overlapping tepals with wavy margins surround white filaments tinged violet at the base, topped with purple anthers.
'Rasputin' flowers profusely from June to August on the current year's growth. At around 250 cm it stays pleasantly compact and suits trellises, fences and walls, as well as planting among shrubs and roses. It thrives in sun as well as semi-shade, and the flower colour develops especially well in shade. The dark blooms look their best against light foliage.
'Rasputin' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 25 cm every March. In spring and summer, provide moist, well-drained soil as well as enough water and nutrients.
