Clematis 'EAST RIVER' was bred by Dutch breeder Wim Snoeijer, selected in 2003 from stock raised in 2000, and introduced to the market in 2008 under the cultivar name 'Zoeastri'. Its star-shaped flowers, 8-10 cm across, open bell-shaped and face horizontally to slightly nodding; they usually carry six tepals, occasionally four or five, in a rich violet with striking yellow stamens.
'EAST RIVER' flowers steadily from June to September. Reaching about 170 cm in height, it grows more as a scrambler than a true climber, making it ideal for the herbaceous border, for scrambling through roses and shrubs, or for a small obelisk and trellis; it also thrives in a container. A sunny to partly shaded, sheltered spot suits it best.
'EAST RIVER' is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut it back hard to around 10 cm in March, as it flowers only on new growth. Plant the crown 5-8 cm deep so that new shoots can reliably re-emerge from below ground after setbacks.
