Clematis 'Otto Froebel' was introduced in 1865 by the French breeding house Lemoine et Fils in Nancy, a cross between Clematis lanuginosa and Clematis patens. It is named after Otto Froebel, a well-known Zurich nurseryman of the 19th century. The 12–15 cm flowers show wavy-edged, pearl-white sepals with a broad creamy central bar, tinged with a delicate mauve at first and sometimes flushed pink; pink filaments with dark maroon anthers create a striking contrast.
'Otto Froebel' flowers from July to September and reaches about 200 cm in height – well suited to trellises, trellised walls and obelisks, and equally happy in a container on patio or balcony.
The variety is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut 'Otto Froebel' back to about 50 cm in March; this corresponds to the light pruning of group 2, which encourages vigorous new growth and abundant flowering.

Die Otto Froebel ist eine sehr schöne, ungewöhnliche und dankbare Clematis. Ihre Blüten sind im Garten noch schöner als hier auf den Bildern. Sie ist sehr blühfreudig. Ich habe 2 Stück und würde sie mir jederzeit wieder in den Garten pflanzen.
