Clematis alpina 'White Columbine' comes from the English nursery Treasures of Tenbury, where John Treasure selected and introduced it in the mid-1980s. Its small, nodding flowers are pure white and measure 4 to 6 cm. Four tapering sepals frame the inner staminodes, which are white with greenish-yellow tips.
'White Columbine' flowers in April and May and occasionally produces a few more blooms in summer. At around 300 cm, it suits trellises, fences, pergolas and small shrubs, and also thrives in a large container. Plant it in sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil; the base and roots of the plant should stay cool and shaded.
'White Columbine' is reliably hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering next year, cut your clematis back to about 100 cm in June. We recommend wearing gloves when handling the plant, as the sap can irritate the skin.
