Dark, almost black red roses
Velvety dark red, almost black rose varieties always draw attention when they bloom. They can be found in all groups, with different growth habits and flowering seasons. Most of them have a good fragrance.
Because of the very dark flower colour, they prefer a slightly shaded position. On the one hand, the very dark velvet red fades too quickly in full sun due to UV radiation; on the other hand, in heat - which most of these varieties actually love - there is a risk that the blooms will burn.
The darkest rose is, by common opinion, Louis XIV.
Unfortunately, our pictures do not always show the very dark red exactly. It is rather hard to photograph, which does not always succeed at the first attempt. If you are looking for the opposite of a red rose - in the 'Magazine' we have put together for you a list of the best white rose varieties.
