I saw Californica plena in the Rosenpark Wilhelmshöhe/Kassel and was overwhelmed by the sight: a mountain full of rose blossoms! At my place it stands on a sunny meadow surrounded by many trees, it has to withstand heavy root pressure. So far it has survived all frosts, no frost damage! Our meadow is so densely rooted that I couldn't dig a proper planting hole at all, the soil is not humus-rich but consists of shell limestone, incredible how it has survived that. It already flowered in the 1st year, at my place it is now in its 3rd year - it grows, is already about 200 cm tall and is full of buds. So far it is healthy. It is in a spot on the slope where I no longer go to water, it manages on its own. That it blooms only "once" does no harm to the sight - on the contrary. I look forward to it and delight in it. In the sum of all its small flowers it is a cloud of fragrance.
It fits well in a natural garden, Californica plena is extremely undemanding.
