The compact-growing English shrub rose Munstead Wood bears large, intensely fragrant blooms in dark, velvety crimson. The blooms are densely double and deeply cup-shaped, in the style of the Old Roses.
The dark bloom colour of Munstead Wood holds up surprisingly well in the sun, though it shows to best effect in partial shade. At the same time it is low-maintenance and blooms generously right through the summer.
The rose variety is named after Munstead Wood, a now listed heritage estate in Surrey / UK. Gertrude Jekyll lived and worked there for a long time.
Munstead Wood is an uncomplicated beginner's rose and was honoured with the AGM (Award of Garden Merit from the RHS) in 2021. It is also very well suited to container gardens.

Great colour, very good fragrancePlanted bare-root this spring and has taken very well. Her growth habit so far is rather slim and upright, though she is still very young, of course. The flowers are large and smell very good, the colour is a dark, rich red, like a good red wine, going into burgundy. Really strikingly beautiful.
So far she is very healthy, although the weather this year is quite cool, wet and stormy here. Quite rough.
The rose has been blooming for weeks now, but so far doesn't push out any new buds, as Mary Rose does, for example.Automatically translated · Show original
