Mulberries
Mulberries – healthy fruit with a long tradition
Mulberries (Morus) belong to the mulberry family (Moraceae) and have been prized for centuries as both useful and ornamental plants. Originally native to Asia, they were cultivated above all in China and Persia – not only for their tasty fruit, but also for silkworm rearing, since the leaves of the white mulberry (Morus alba) served as the silkworms’ main food. Today mulberries are found all over the world and are popular garden plants in Europe, North America and other regions.
Depending on the variety, the trees and shrubs grow upright or broadly spreading and reach heights of between 3 and 10 metres. The foliage is deciduous, often decoratively serrated, and in some cases turns an attractive colour in autumn. The fruit ranges from white through red to deep purple, and is juicy, sweet and rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It is perfect for eating fresh, for jams, jellies, juices and desserts, and also for making wine or schnapps.
Mulberries are easy to care for, frost hardy and undemanding. They prefer sunny to partially shaded sites on well-drained, humus-rich soil and need only moderate feeding. With their robust nature, attractive leaves and decorative fruit, mulberries are an asset to any garden, both as ornamental and as useful plants.
Whether you use them as shade providers, for picking fruit straight from the tree or to create a natural-style garden – mulberries combine tradition, beauty and enjoyment. Discover our wide range of mulberry varieties for every site and every taste.
