The Chinese magnolia vine (Schisandra chinensis), also known as Wu-Wei-Zi or Chinese lemon tree, is a decorative, edible and medicinal climber from Asia. The white-cream flowers appear from May to June and form a charming contrast to the green leaves. From August to September the scarlet, spherical fruits develop in berry clusters and can be used raw as well as processed into tea, jam, juice or liqueur.
Growth and appearance: The vine grows as a robust, deciduous climber with a height of up to 10 m and an annual growth rate of 0.5–1.5 m. The shoots climb by themselves up pergolas, fences, arbours or schisandra vines. The leaves are vivid green in summer and add to the plant's attractive look.
Location and care: Schisandra prefers sunny to partially shaded sites on nutrient-rich, moist, well-drained soils without waterlogging. It is hardy (zone 5A–8) and low-maintenance. The first fruits appear from the 4th–6th year after planting, so patience and a suitable location are rewarded.
Use: Ideal for greening fences, pergolas, arbours and building facades. The plant combines visual appeal with culinary and health benefits, as fruits, leaves and bark contain schisandrins, vitamin E and valuable trace elements. Whether as an ornamental plant, medicinal plant or supplier of vitamin-rich fruits – the Chinese magnolia vine is versatile and an enrichment for every garden.
