Schisandra

Schisandra – the healthy berry from the Far East

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), also known as the Chinese berry or five-flavour berry, belongs to the Schisandraceae family and has been an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Other common names are Spaltkörbchen and berry cluster. The bright red fruit, which appears in lush clusters on the shoots, is known for its unique taste: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent all at once. In Asia it is used to strengthen the liver and kidneys, to promote stamina and vitality, and as a valuable source of nutrition.

The schisandra plant is a robust, deciduous climber that reaches heights of 2 to 4 metres. It likes to twine up trellises, pergolas or fences and can be supported with Spaltkörbchen or similar supports. The green leaves turn an attractive yellow in autumn. The fruit ripens in late summer and can be used in many ways: raw as a snack, dried, or made into tea, jam, juice, liqueur, smoothies, compote or even spice powders.

Schisandra prefers sunny to partially shaded sites on humus-rich, well-drained soil. It is easy to care for, hardy and makes only modest demands on fertiliser. Besides its culinary and health value, schisandra is also an attractive ornamental plant in the garden – with decorative leaves, flowers and striking berry clusters.

With schisandra you bring health, beauty and Far Eastern tradition into your garden. Whether for your own supply, to decorate pergolas or to complement a herb and berry garden – schisandra combines usefulness, enjoyment and visual appeal in a single plant.
